The Cumann na mBan, the ‘League of Women’, was formed in 1914 as an auxiliary corps, to complement the nationalist Irish Volunteer Force. Members of the Cumann na mBan took an active part in the Easter Rising, tending the wounded, preparing meals, and gathering intelligence. Seventy members were arrested after the insurrection.
