Story: Restaurants and food outlets

Georgie Pie, 1997 (1st of 2)

Georgie Pie, 1997

Georgie Pie was a New Zealand-owned fast food chain. The first outlet opened in 1977 and competed with the American franchise restaurants Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and McDonald's, all of which had opened earlier in the decade. In the 1990s a number of new Georgie Pie outlets opened but the chain ran at a loss, and the outlets were progressively closed from 1996. Here, one-year-old Tainui Bridger samples some of Georgie Pie's offerings in 1997.

In mid-2013 the Georgie Pie brand returned to the market on a trial basis, producing pies that were sold through McDonald's outlets in Auckland and Waikato.
