This image by John Pascoe shows three trampers about to head into the Kaikōura ranges of Marlborough. Pascoe was among those who promoted tramping in the 1940s and post-war years. Increasing numbers of New Zealanders joined tramping and mountaineering clubs and used the network of huts which were built in the back country for deer cullers. Others enjoyed hunting in such areas. These individualistic recreations were an alternative to team sports during the years of the non-working Kiwi weekend, from 1945 to the 1980s.
