Te Aute College prefects, 1880

Te Aute College prefects, 1880

Some of the prefects in this photograph from Te Aute College are holding cricket bats. Te Aute, in Hawke's Bay, was an elite Māori secondary school, and both rugby and cricket were widely played there. However, these games were far less commonly found in the isolated rural areas where most young Māori men lived.
