A ferry drops off passengers from Auckland for a picnic on Motutapu Island in the Hauraki Gulf, around 1905. From the 1870s excursion trains and ferries took passengers from towns to scenic coastal and rural spots for picnics and other leisure activities. Excursions were usually on Sundays or public holidays. While Sunday excursions attracted large crowds, they drew criticism from churchgoers, who saw such pleasure-seeking as breaking the sabbath.
