On many rural golf courses such as this one at Eketāhuna in northern Wairarapa, the fairways are regularly used for grazing. The sheep act as greenkeepers, fertilising the ground and keeping the rough (the longer grass on the fringes of the fairways) in order. Income from grazing fees supports the golf club's finances. The sheep are removed on days when players are using the course.
