Defenders: Bernice Mene

Another well-known Silver Ferns captain who played both goal keep and goal defence was Bernice Mene, who was first selected for the Silver Ferns in 1992 at the age of 17. By the time she led the team between 1997 and 2002, she was regarded as the world's best defensive player. Mene also captained the New Zealand Under-21 team and the Southern Sting. Here, she attempts to block an Australian shot during the world championship final in Christchurch in 1999.
