The 1938 New Zealand basketball team that played the first international game, against Australia, is pictured with captain Margaret Matangi at centre front. The New Zealanders were used to playing nine-a-side basketball, but had to switch to seven-a-side for the test. This put them at a significant disadvantage, and they lost 40–11.
