The Dixieland cabaret in Point Chevalier, Auckland, shown in the 1920s or 1930s, was the second of two Dixieland cabarets opened in Auckland by entrepreneur Frederick Rayner. Rayner was a dentist who had immigrated to New Zealand from Canada. The cabarets had huge dance floors – the Point Chevalier Dixieland’s was 330 square metres and the city Dixieland’s was 280 square metres. They also featured comfortable seating (referred to in a newspaper report as ‘cuddle cubicles’) and a relaxed approach to liquor laws. The cabarets were crowded with dancers waltzing, foxtrotting and one-stepping to the jazz band.
