Billiards championship, Christchurch, 1909

This photo of a billiards championship in Christchurch, 1909, shows clearly the spectator interest in events. Sizeable crowds would also come to watch the games of professional players. The great professionals, such as New Zealander Clark McConachy, began their careers in amateur championships such as the one shown here.
