Steve Wātene, seen at right leading the haka at the opening match of the Kiwis' tour of Australia in 1930, captained both Kiwis and New Zealand Māori teams in the 1930s. A strong and versatile player, Wātene was a back-row forward, a fullback and a loose forward.
