Down syndrome karate students, 2009

People of all ages and abilities are attracted to martial-arts training. Maria Borshevsky, an instructor at Wellington's seido karate centre, has a child with Down syndrome and set up a class to suit the learning style of such students. Here 15-year-old Daniel Howard (left) and 12-year-old Daniel Wickens, who both have Down syndrome, take part in a grading exercise at the centre in 2009. Daniel Howard gained a blue belt and Daniel Wickens a blue-tip belt (a grade between the white, or first, belt and the blue belt).
