Story: Smoking

Biddy of the Buller (3rd of 5)

Biddy of the Buller

Bridget Goodwin was one of the few 19th-century women who regularly smoked a pipe. Most respectable women would not have dared indulge in this male pleasure but Biddy of the Buller, as she was known, was unconventional. With two male companions she was a gold miner in the Buller Gorge area of the West Coast, and was known to take part in other male customs such as drinking sprees.
