Prince of Manavadar's team, 1938

In 1938 the Prince of Manavadar (then a state in Gujarat, north-west India) sponsored a hockey team to tour New Zealand. The prince was himself a strong player but was unable to join the tour. His team won all but one of its 31 New Zealand matches, including all three tests. This July 1938 photo shows an attack on the New Zealand goal during the second test at the Basin Reserve, Wellington. The Indian team won 4–0.
