First New Zealand Indian hockey team, 1936

An All-India hockey team toured New Zealand in 1935. They won all 28 games with an average score of 11–1, attracting crowds of up to 14,000 and astonishing spectators with their impressive stickwork. Soon afterwards, Indians resident in Wellington formed their own team. This front-page photo shows them playing the University B team in May 1936, a match won by the Indians 1–0.
