Short hair, 1993

In the 1970s many feminists cut their hair, enjoying the convenience of short hair and rejecting the expectation that women would spend considerable time on their appearance. The style was widely adopted and variations of it became fashionable in the 1980s and 1990s. This 1993 photograph of Ruth Richardson, National Party MP and then finance minister, shows the conservative face of what had earlier been a radical choice.
