A team member works hard in the tug-of-war at the Divisional Sports Meeting, held at the Maadi Sporting Club, Egypt, in 1940. General Bernard Freyberg, commander of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, encouraged sports as a way of enhancing team spirit and keeping men fit and active when not in combat. A range of sporting facilities were set up at the New Zealand Division's base at Maadi, near Cairo, and regular competitions were organised.
