At the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games New Zealanders competed as part of an Australasian team for the second and final time. This photograph shows the Australasian swimming team, which included New Zealander Malcolm Champion (fifth from right). He became the first New Zealander to win an Olympic gold medal. New Zealander George Hill (third from right), who was in the Australasian team as a runner, was training with the swimmers at the time the photo was taken. He competed in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres, but did not win any medals. The third New Zealander in the Australasian team, tennis player Anthony Wilding, won a bronze medal.
