Bernie Portenski, age-group world champion

Bernie (Bernardine) Portenski has held numerous age-group records in track and road racing. She won the 2001 Auckland marathon outright at the age of 52. Between 1994 and 2010 she set New Zealand and world records and marathon bests in the 40-plus, 45-plus and 50-plus age groups. In 2011, aged 62, Portenski held four 55-plus age-group world records for middle- and long-distance running, and five world records in the 60-plus age group, including for the half-marathon and marathon.
