This is the interior of J. Ballantyne & Company's Christchurch furniture factory in the 1890s. From the 1870s mechanisation revolutionised furniture production. Mechanical aids such as bench saws and lathes increased production and decreased costs. This appears to be an assembly room, where mechanically cut pieces are put together before finishing.
