Protesters outside the Pacific Islands Forum, 2011

Protesters calling for West Papua's freedom greeted Pacific leaders when they arrived for the opening ceremony of a Pacific Forum meeting on Auckland's waterfront in 2011. West Papua (the western half of the island of New Guinea) is rich in resources, and has been governed by Indonesia since 1962. The West Papuans' struggle for independence has at times involved violence on both sides.
