The governor-general has supreme constitutional authority in defence matters in New Zealand. Power is only exercised by the governor-general on the advice of the minister of defence and other ministers of the Crown. This is Governor-General Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae at his swearing-in ceremony on 31 August 2011. Prior to becoming governor-general he was the chief of defence force. Mateparae is inspecting the armed forces guard of honour at Parliament. Visible in the photo are members of the Royal New Zealand Navy and the New Zealand Army.
