Vernon Cracknell, leader of the Social Credit Political League, is shown with his wife and daughter after winning the Hobson seat at the 1966 general election. This was the first time since 1943 that a parliamentary seat had been won by a candidate not from the Labour or National parties. The entry of Social Credit into electoral politics in 1954 had ensured that neither major party was able subsequently to achieve a majority of votes cast.
