Waireka pā in Taranaki was the scene of a battle between Māori and colonial volunteer and regular forces in 1860. This was the first time New Zealand volunteers came under fire, and also the first time a Victoria Cross was won in New Zealand (by William Odgers). Thomas Lister (front left) received the New Zealand Medal for his service during the New Zealand wars. He served in Taranaki with the 57th Regiment and later the Armed Constabulary. His New Zealand Medal, which is visible on his lapel and shown in detail at right, is held by Puke Ariki museum in New Plymouth.
