Whatiwhatihoe pā: inhabitants, 1885

An old man and a young girl pose for photographer Alfred Burton at King Tāwhiao's Whatiwhatihoe in 1885. Another girl stands drinking in the doorway of the nearest raupō (bulrush) whare. Burton took a number of photographs of the pā and its inhabitants during his visit to the region.
