Though 'King Country' has never been an official place name, it is a commonly used and understood label for this part of the country. A number of local businesses and some community and sports groups include 'King Country' in their names. In the 2000s the region's representative rugby team, the King Country Rams, played in the Heartland Championship, a competition for semi-professional provincial rugby unions. King Country won the second-tier Lochore Cup in 2015, This sign is at Rugby Park in Te Kūiti.
