The second Labour government: Nash and Nordmeyer

Between 1949 and 1972 Labour was in power for only one term. The leader of the 1957–60 Labour government was Walter Nash (left), seen here with Arnold Nordmeyer, his minister of finance. Nash spent much of his term representing New Zealand overseas, and Nordmeyer and other ministers were required to defend Labour policies during a sharp economic downturn.
