Guests recline on mattresses and listen to speeches – much as would happen in a wharenui (meeting house) – in the Government House ballroom on 20 November 1985, the evening of Sir Paul Reeves’s swearing-in as New Zealand’s first Māori governor-general. That evening Prime Minister David Lange joined them for part of the proceedings.
