Image-making: Michael Joseph Savage

Michael Joseph Savage is best remembered for this photograph. Spencer Digby’s shot showed the avuncular former radical who by the mid-1930s ‘smelt of the church bazaar, not at all of the barricades.’ Framed copies of this photograph hung in the homes of the Labour faithful long after Savage’s death in 1940.
