A three-day trek on the island of Lombok takes in the second-highest volcano in Indonesia, the 3,726-metre Mt Rinjani in Gunung Rinjani National Park, established in 1997. Since 1999 New Zealand aid has helped fund this community-based ecotourism venture. The Rinjani trek centre (pictured), which includes interpretive displays, was officially opened in August 2002 by Lombok’s governor alongside New Zealand's ambassador.
