Male tuatara (2nd of 2)

Male tuatara

Tuatara once lived on the mainland, but the species has long since been displaced by predators to offshore islands. They are long-lived and some have been kept in captivity for over 50 years. On offshore islands, tuataras have odd living arrangements – they make their homes in petrel burrows, and at times the two species share the burrow.
