The minister in charge of the Earthquake Commission (EQC), Bill English, and EQC insurance manager Lance Dixon visit Sea Breeze Close in the Christchurch suburb of Bexley to examine properties damaged in the Canterbury (Darfield) earthquake of 4 September 2010. The EQC was established in 1945 to provide earthquake and war damage cover for those who bought fire insurance. Cover for other natural disasters was introduced later and cover for war damage was dropped. The EQC – renamed Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake in 2024 – is a type of Crown entity known as a Crown agent.
