Large-scale commercial early childhood care providers emerged in the late 1970s. The first Kindercare centre opened in 1978. By 2011 there were 36 centres in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch. This is the Kindercare centre in Kilbirnie, Wellington.
