New Zealand's first airmail stamps were issued in 1931, but at that stage there were few planes to carry mail. It was another four years before there were regular flights – but the stamps could be used to connect mail with airmail flights overseas. Here, Australian aviator Charles Ulm (right) poses with postal workers as a mailbag is loaded for a flight from Auckland to Invercargill in Ulm's plane, the Faith in Australia, in 1933.
