Story: Early childhood education and care

Nanny and children

Nanny and children

Well-off families sometimes employed nannies to care for their children in the home. Mrs Fergussson, known as 'Old Nurse' by her charges, cared for the Strang children of Palmerston North in the early 20th century. She is pictured with two of the young Strang children and their cousin around 1910.
