Students of Hukarere Māori Girls’ College in Hawke's Bay learn dressmaking (top) and cooking (bottom) in 1913. Māori girls’ schools have sometimes been criticised for their focus on teaching Māori girls domestic skills rather than giving them an academic education. However, many of the Māori women leaders of the 20th and 21st centuries attended these schools.
