Alfie's Cabaret in Wellington was one place where gay men and lesbians could meet to socialise with friends, have a drink with lovers or meet potential partners. While there had always been some places where people could meet same-sex partners, challenges to discrimination on the basis of sexual identification from the 1970s contributed to a proliferation of new places where gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersexual and transgender people could meet informally.
