The security industry has grown considerably in New Zealand and in many other Western countries since the Second World War. There was more personal property to protect and there was also a general rise in crime rates over this period. Police had given greater priority to solving violent crime over property crimes, and this had provided security companies with more opportunities to sell their services to the public. Chubb Security established its New Zealand branch in the early 1950s.
