Playing in the street

The street was a popular playground for Māori children in Ponsonby, Auckland, in 1971, as this photo shows. This inner-city suburb was then the destination for many Māori relocating from rural communities. The shift required many sudden changes in lifestyle by both Māori children and their parents.
