Story: Care and carers

Newtown home for the aged

Newtown home for the aged

This photograph of the Home for the Aged Needy (later Te Hopai Home) in Newtown, Wellington, was taken in the 1880s. In the 19th century older people without family or money were often forced to enter such institutions as a last resort. Many Pākehā men who had come to New Zealand in the 1840s and 1850s, and had not married, were in this situation by the 1880s and 1890s.
