This 1929 photograph shows New Zealand's Jewish leaders assembled for the consecration of the new Wellington synagogue – from left to right, W. Phillips, S. Triester, J. I. Goldsmith, M. M. Heinemann, Reverend A. Astor, Reverend C. H. Pitkowsky, Reverend H. Van Staveren, Reverend S. A. Goldstein and P. Meyers. Reverends Astor and Goldstein were both opposed to their followers marrying non-Jews, fearing that such marriages would weaken New Zealand's small and fragile Jewish community.
