One of the most important influences on Hone Tūwhare’s development as a poet was his friendship with fellow poet and communist Ron (R. A. K.) Mason. Mason (right) offered encouragement and advice, and published one of Tūwhare’s first poems in the communist newspaper the People’s Voice in 1950.
