Te Au Rere Waka Ama Club crew, 'OCC Encore', win their heat at the Waka Ama Spring Nationals at Lake Karāpiro in 2008. In the late 20th century and the early 2000s the sport of canoe racing grew rapidly, particularly waka ama (outrigger canoeing). Waka ama clubs had many Māori members.
