In the face of discrimination in New Zealand society, both Chinese and Indians took up particular niches in the economy where they could cooperate with other members of their ethnic communities. One specialised role was as greengrocers, where they were able to draw on relationships with their compatriots who were market gardeners. This Chinese family is in their greengrocer's shop in the early 20th century.
