Typhoid camp, 1924

By the early 20th century Māori were suffering from loss of land and exposure to European diseases. These tents were the only facilities available in the Urewera to treat a typhoid outbreak. Typhoid was a disease of poor living conditions, where the water supply was inadequately separated from human waste.
