Dawn bath

YMCA members wash themselves in a stream in the Hūnua Ranges. They rose at 6 a.m. to enjoy a cold-water bath. Such spartan activities in outdoor settings were seen as character-building. The YMCA developed campsites where members could stay overnight and take part in outdoor activities.
