Day room, Porirua Hospital, 1950s

By the 1950s many psychiatric hospitals used a combination of large institutional buildings and more modern villa designs. Here, patients at Porirua Hospital near Wellington are shown in their day room, with furniture and fittings intended to make their surroundings more comfortable and home-like than in the past.
