Social services: Bethany Centre, 1950s

Freshly changed by a Salvation Army nurse, babies carpet the floor of the Auckland Bethany Centre in this 1950s photo. The Auckland centre was one of seven Bethany homes around New Zealand offering health services and support to women giving birth, often for the first time and without other support. In 2011 the last Bethany home, in Auckland, was closed.
