Norman Brown (third from right), a smartly uniformed Salvation Army officer, offers church publications to kauri gumdiggers in their camp in Northland in 1911. Officers like Brown travelled long distances through roadless districts to talk to anyone who might be interested in their message. They often had to rely on donations of food, shelter and cash to survive.
