The new entrants' class at St Mary's Catholic School, Tauranga, smile for their 1986 school photo, with their teacher, Sister Catherine, who lived next door at the St Joseph of Cluny Convent. Marguerite Hill (middle row, second from left) remembers that all but one of her teachers were Catholic. Classes in religious education were given every day, and children's masses were held by two visiting priests. However, by 1986 lay (non-ordained) teachers had almost entirely replaced nuns on the school's staff. Sister Catherine was the last nun to teach at St Mary's and this class was the last she taught.
